For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Marcoing on 30th November 1917. He was in command of a strong point which was heavily shelled. When his trench was entirely blown in he withdrew his survivors to a neighbouring trench. When the shelling ceased he led a bombing party, drove the enemy out and re-established the position. By his initiative and determination he saved a vital position.
