Mentioned in Despatches
London Gazette, June 1st 1917.
Action Date, June 28th, 1916 – Beaumont-Hamel raid.
He displayed the greatest gallantry and coolness during a raid near Beaumont-Hamel on the night of June 28th 1916. A bomb was thrown by the enemy which he at once picked up and threw back at the enemy. The bomb burst on leaving his hand and he was severely wounded. But for his promptitude the bomb would undoubtedly have caused other casualties in the raiding party. The case had only just been brought to notice, owing to the man having been invalided out of the service from his wounds, and other men who witnessed the action having become casualties during the raid.
