Sgt. Maj. Mackay has done invaluable work as R.S.M. of the 2nd Battalion since September 1915. Owing to the low standard of education and inexperience of the N.C.O.'s of the Battalion, a very great deal of extra work has been thrown on his shoulders – this he has always carried out cheerfully and untiringly. He has shown the greatest tact in handling a rather difficult type of man and the general absence of crime in the Battalion is largely due to him. R.S.M. Mackay served in the Seaforth Highlanders and Army Gymnastic Staff from 1887-1908, when he retired on pension, rejoining voluntarily in March 1915.
