L/Cpl. Gardner was in charge of the advanced Echelon of Transport consisting of S.A.A. bombs and Stokes mortars, which were to follow closely behind the attacking waves. This convoy consisted of G.S. Wagons, Limbers and Pack Cobs. When the attack started the enemy put down a heavy barrage on the area where the convoy was. L/Cpl. Gardner, with great presence of mind, hitched up and galloped forward through the barrage bringing his convoy with him, thus saving it and keeping in touch with attacking troops. He thus showed remarkable gallantry and devotion to duty while setting a noble example to his men.
