As battalion runner he showed great bravery during the whole of the operation. He was always cheerful and in daylight went with messages to the front line several times, disregarding the sniping and machine gun fire. By his splendid example he helped others to bring ammunition from the dump to Battalion  H.Q. and he also did sentry duty during the day and night with the remainder of H.Q.'s party. He was found wounded while doing duty.
